Gareth Southgate delivers verdict on Marcus Rashford red card

Image
Gareth Southgate admitted he thought Marcus Rashford's tackle against FC Copenhagen was worthy of a red card but his ongoing struggles at Manchester United are "nothing to do with me". The 26-year-old was called up to England's 25-player party on Thursday for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia, despite scoring just once in 15 appearances across all com Pet itions this season. Rashford's season went from bad to worse on Wednesday when he was shown a straight red card for serious foul play, with his dismissal coming at a time when United were 2-0 up and cruising towards a much-needed Champions League win. United proceeded to fold in the Danish capital, losing the game 4-3 after conceding late goals to Lukas Lerager and Roony Bardghji, and now face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages after dropping to the foot of Group A. Man Utd's dream and nightmare Champions League draws

Image
Manchester United will learn their three Champions League group stage opponents on Thursday when the draw for the 2023/24 com Pet ition is made. United have alternated between the Champions League and Europa League in recent seasons, failing to qualify for the continent's elite com Pet ition two years in a row since 2017/18 and 2018/19. Given that pot one of the Champions League draw is specifically reserved for the holders, Europa League winners and the national champions of the top-ranked European leagues, United will go into pot two. Of all the teams in that pot, only Real Madrid hold more ranking points. The draw will see United matched with one team from each of the other three pots. That means all of those in...

Pep Guardiola makes surprising claim on 2021 Champions League final team selection

Pep Guardiola says he would change his Manchester City lineup for the 2021 Champions League final defeat to Chelsea if given the chance. Fernandinho and Rodri were both left on the bench as City played with Ilkay Gundogan as their lone holding midfielder, while Kevin De Bruyne was deployed in a false nine role before suffering a nasty head injury. Attackers Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero both made substitute appearances but the Cityzens couldn't force an equaliser after Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the Game to earn Chelsea their second Champions League crown. The Premier League and FA Cup champions have the chance to rectify that blot on their record on Saturday against Inter, having dismantled Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the knockout stages on the way to Istanbul's final. City are heavy favourites like they were two years ago and Guardiola admits he would switch up his chosen XI if given the chance to relive the occasion in Porto. He said: "It was a Game pl...
