A couple of Atlantic Division foes will meet for the first time this season when the Ottawa Senators welcome the Tampa Bay Lightning to Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday night.

Tampa Bay suffered its first loss of the season in the NHL odds on Saturday night, but the stars came out to play with plenty of points to help NHL player prop Over bettors cash. Can Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos lead their club to victory in Ottawa, or will Brady Tkachuk help his team defend home ice?

Lightning vs Senators predictions

The Lightning were handed their first loss of the season at the hands of the Red Wings on Saturday night, falling 6-4. It was another good Game for their stars, though, as Steven Stamkos notched two goals and an assist, Victor Hedman had three points, and Nikita Kucherov added two helpers.

That trio has been hot to start the season, as all three sit tied for first on the team with four points. Kucherov comes into tonight’s game with two straight multi-point outings, and we’ll look for him to do it again by hitting the Over on 1.5 points as our best bet.

The Lightning star faced the Senators three times last season, finding the score sheet at least twice in each of those meetings for a total of seven points.

Joonas Korpisalo will tend the net for the Sens tonight after getting off to a rough start in his first game with the club. Korpisalo allowed five goals on 42 shots against the Hurricanes on Wednesday for a 5.05 GAA and an .881 SV%. The goaltender was decent in front of a poor Blue Jackets team last season, though his 3.17 GAA left something to be desired.

With the Lightning averaging 4.50 goals per game so far and Kucherov factoring on nearly half of the team’s tallies, he should be able to put up another two points against Korpisalo and the Sens tonight.

My best bet: Nikita Kucherov Over 1.5 Points (+105 at SIA)

We’ll also look for Brady Tkachuk to continue his hot start with another tally for the Senators. The captain scored two of Ottawa’s goals in a 5-2 win against Philadelphia on Saturday while also leading the team with seven shots on net this season.

We’ll round out the same-game parlay by taking the Over on 6.5 goals — a fairly safe bet considering both clubs have seen at least seven goals in each of their games so far this season.

Lightning vs Senators moneyline and Over/Under analysis

The Senators come into tonight’s contest as the home favorite at -123 with the Lightning getting +100 on the road. While Tampa Bay might still have the better team on paper, they do have a huge question mark in net, which makes me lean towards Ottawa in this one.

Matt Tomkins is not yet confirmed as tonight’s starting goaltender for the Lightning but will likely make his first NHL start after Jonas Johansson played yesterday. The 29-year-old Tomkins played for Farjestads BK Karlstad of the SHL last season, posting a .911 SV% in 32 games. He was a seventh-round pick of the Blackhawks back in 2012 but never made it past the AHL, and never even made it as an AHL starter, so there are understandably plenty of questions about his game.

Tonight’s total opened at 7 goals and I think the Over is the clear play here, as scoring remains high through this early season. Both clubs have allowed an average of 3.50 goals over their two contests so far while the Over is 4-0 through their last four meetings and has cashed in seven of their last nine.

These teams loved scoring against each other last season, averaging a total of nine goals across three meetings, so I don’t expect to see anything different tonight.
